The Experience
Every since the beginning of this unit, I've been thinking about that one poem that Mr. Bruno read to us the first day. I believe it was by Robert Frost and it talked about teachers/students beating down poems to get some meaning out of it when they should just be experiencing what the poem has to offer. So, with that being said, do poems work like other works of literature like novels and short stories? I remember Mr. Bruno talking about how when there are two arguments on a given work, the one that has the most evidence and supporting factors will be the "winning" argument. Do poems have a "winning" argument or is it ok for us to interpret the poem how we please?

I don't believe poems work like other pieces of literature. Yes, while authors of poems write with a certain intent and try to convey a message or theme in the poem, I think there is not right answer or theme. Poems can be interpreted in so many different ways by different people. In my opinion, short stories and novels can possibly be interpreted in different ways, but that is more rare than the different themes and ideas that can be interpreted from a poem.
ReplyDeleteThe poem is "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that poets really can have a winning or lossing arguments. I agree with you ashleigh. But I also think that there are some interpretation that can't be connected, but I think the feelings that a poem can stir can be anything. I think that an effective poem, like a piece of music, can stir expierences inside every person and are unipe to every person.
