One of my all-time favorite short stories is, "The Mask of the Red Death" by Edger Allen Poe, so when offered the chance to write about any short story, I of course chose that one. (If you haven't read it, you really should... The end gets me every time... =P)
What did you all decide to write about? Any good short stories you think others should know about?

It's really weird that you posted this because I was about to post the exact same question, and because I wrote about one of Poe's stories, too. I chose "The Cask of Amontillado." I read it a few years ago, and even though it was really creepy (typical Poe), I loved it. It was pretty easy to write about because it's filled with irony and foreshadowing. I actually learned a lot more about the story than I did the first time I read it because I know so much more about analyzing a story now. I would definitely recommend it to all of you, because it's an interesting story that is great for analysis.
ReplyDeleteI've read some of it, but never the whole thing... I'll have to check it out. (Especially since I just love Poe =D)
ReplyDeleteI loooove Poe. I think I've read at least one of his stories in every English class since eighth grade. His stories are all so intense, morbid, and intriguing..
ReplyDeleteAn interesting fact about "The Masque of Red Death" in particular: In the musical Phantom of the Opera, the Phantom attends a ball dressed as the Red Death, as seen here in the 1925 film -- http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f3/Phantomtechnicolor.jpg
Crazy! I picked The Cask of Amontillado, too. I felt like it was pretty easy to interpret, but I can never come up with a theme. I tried to incorporate the theme into my paper but I pretty much suck at trying to pick out a theme so the end result = failure. However, I did pick up on the rediculous amount of irony and imagery!!
ReplyDeleteI picked The Story of An Hour. As you can tell it is a really short story but it seems to blow you back real hard. It outlines the drastic day of a young woman who is wrecked to find out her husband had died and then overjoyed. She now has the freedom thousands of women want all over the United States, but cannot recieve because it is only the 1890's. I wont give out the end so you should read it! If you have any questions about it just ask me about it in class. (Im not usually one who reads women's literature)
