Characters We Love To Hate

I love how Jane Austen's characters in Pride and Prejudice are all very different from one another. I know when I was reading Pride and Predjudice, there were a few characters that I absolutely loved, but also several that I loved to hate. I thought it would be fun if we posted about which characters in the novel really got under our skin. I think for me the one that I despised the most was Lady Catharine. Her excessive pride pretty much defined her character. She was narrow minded and focused far too much on her own social status. She expected others to bend over backwords to please her, and it was such a relief to see Elizabeth stand up to her at the end of the novel.

  1. Lydia was the character I loved to hate. She was just so consumed with frivolous items!!! And when she ran away with Mr. Wickham I wanted slap her upside the head. She should have grown up and listened to her parents more.

  2. I love Pride and Prejudice but there are multiple characters who i do not like at all. Lady Catherine for sure was annoying. she could not stand the rumor that Elizabeth was going to marry Darcy because of Elizabeth's low social status. She didn't care at all about what kind of person she was because her Pride truly consumed all that she did and she wasn't even able to handle a rumor.

I also do not like Lydia because i find her to be so immature and annoying. Even after she almost ruins her family's name she still goes on and on about how wonderful it is to be married and seems completely oblivious to the disaster her marriage is from the beginning. Mr. Bennet should have put a muzzle on her so we wouldn't have had to listen to (well read. i guess) her annoying comments.

Mr. Collins has good intentions but he's so weird. I don't like him because he creates such awkward moments in the story and to me seems like a creeper. I don't hate him necessarily but i do not like him...he's just strange.

Though i dont love these characters i realize that they do all have an important role in the story and that they were the cause of many things which did result in a happy ending.

  3. Sorry Lydia I need to agree, too much flirting/talking/too much you just being an immature 15 year old. Really, those military officers stationed close to Meryton you had to flirt didn't you. I love to hate you. You are just too bold and you boss Kitty around...Wait I forgot you almost ravaged your family...Wow you’re cool.

  4. Mr. Collins and Wickham both have traits to them that are not appealing at all. Although they are interesting characters within the book...probably more so than some others, they are very conceited. Mr. Collins was self-absorbed and for that a lot of characters in the story, even his own family didn't like him. So it would not be a surprise to see people outside the story dislike him. Wickham, just the whole fact that he was into getting someone to raise his social class made him seem like a "parasite"; feeding off the wealth of another person. The whole "using" in relationships are not cool to me at all and it's something that I usually see as bad and really unfair.

  5. Definitely Lydia. I remember even when I watched the movie (Kiera Knightley version) whenever it first came out that Lydia was just the stupidest girl ever. It's like the line Mr. Bennet says about all his daughters except for Elizabeth in the first chapter, "They have none of them much to recommend them...they are all silly and ignorant like other girls...." Something about her mannerisms irked me. Maybe because silly teenage girls hit too close to high school home?

  6. I hated, and I mean HATED, Lydia for her snobbish disregard for anyone but herself! OW I couldn't stand how proud she seemed to have been so stupid! I don't know, maybe she was meant to be amusing, but she was annoying! But I loved Jane, though she's passive and naive, because I wish all the time that I could be as positive about everyone. Also, I loved Elizabeth! She was strong and caring and though she contrasted Jane in her perception of people, her intentions were always good. I identify with Elizabeth a lot more!

I'm going to have to agree with most people by choosing Lydia and her partner Mr. Wickham. Both are ridiculously shallow and hurt others in attempts to benefit themselves. They both definitely deserve each other, and it would be somewhat amusing if their marriage wasn't stopped to see how that would turn out, but I'm glad it was stopped for the sake of the Bennet family. It kind of makes me wonder though how much control the parents really have over their daughters unless they are so focused on their older daughters that their neglect for Lydia has caused her to become such a naive brat.

I pretty much hated Caroline Bingley, I don't care how "concerned" she was with her brother's future. In fact, it's funny, she was such a (b-word) I kind of liked her. But it got old, and I wanted to tear through the pages and kick her in the face. But all 'n all, she was the one I couldn't stand the most.

  9. I definitely agree with everyone here. All of those characters are terribly annoying. Just to shake things up though, I'm going to add Mrs. Bennet to the list. She ticks me off so much. She's so arrogant and air headed and self-righteous. Poor Lydia never had a chance at being much else than what she was. It's a miracle the other girls didn't turn out the same. And for that matter, Mr. Bennet was kind of a loser father. He could have straitened any of them out but he didn't. He let it fester until his whole family was almost destroyed. Really, most of the characters in this book are unbearable. It's still one of my favorites though.
