Theme in "A Worn Path"

Here is the focal point Welty was after:

The subject of the story, expressed through Phoenix's journey, is "the deep-grained habit of love."

Do you agree or disagree? If you agree, what evidence can you find to support Welty's vision? If you disagree, what evidence can you find that she is seeing more than can be inferred by what is written on the page?

  1. I'm not sure exactly what the quote means. If I had to take a stab at it, it seems to me that the quote is saying that maybe love is something that is maybe so instinctive and uncontrollable among humans, that we do things out of love almost unknowingly or without any thought at all. Maybe that's what Phoenix's journey means, that because she loves her son, she makes the journey to the town for medicine so frequently that eventually it becomes a habit for her and she forgets why she does it sometimes. If this is close to what Welty is saying, then I do agree with Welty to some extent. I think that when people are in love or they do love someone, be it a family member, spouse, or whatever, they will do almost anything for that person without thinking about the consequences sometimes. Of course, what I'm saying isn't completely absolute, but this is what I got out of it maybe.

  2. Phoenix’s journey is definitely a deep grained habit. She forgets why she does it and who she does it for, all she knows is that she /has/ to do it.. No matter the cost. She is so devoted to her cause, that she doesn’t even let the snow, her aged and tired body, or an intimidating hunter scare her off. She keeps going even if she forgets why. It’s pretty moving actually. I wish I could be as committed to an ideal or person as Phoenix is.
