Ok, so I've read all of Taylor Mali's poems on his website and I want to use a few of them. But a lot of times they are straightforward. His poetry is very different from anything else we discussed in class. He tells it like it is. Does one analyze his style of poetry in the same way?
You should analyze the poem the same way. Despite the "plain speech" of Mali's poems, they have much to say that is not spoken in the confines of the lines.
I’ve already read Taylor Mali’s stuff and I absolutely love it. It’s poetry in modern/current language, but it doesn’t loose any aspect of what poetry is supposed to do. It appears so straightforward at first but then you read between the lines and it’s like…whoa. It is similar to a translation of a foreign piece but with all the nuances, idioms, and intentions of the original.
I love Taylor Mali's poems a lot, because they made me put myself in those same situations. I tended to wonder how I would feel if something like that was happening to me. I really like poems that cause me to do that. It really makes it that much more enjoyable. When poems aren't as straight forward as Mali's I always have to read over them more than once to fully comprehend what message is trying to be conveyed.
Thank you, my good sir.
